Sumatra is a large island in Indonesia. This particular coffee is grown on the lofty volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser at altitudes of 2,500 to 5,000 feet. We roast this coffee dark, which results in a bold but smooth cup of coffee.
Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, and Sumatra is the second largest of these. The islands were formed by volcanic activity, and their mineral-rich soil—fortified with volcanic ash and diverse plant life—have helped to make Indonesia's coffees among the most famous and celebrated around the world.
Indonesia's coffees have long been prized for a particular cup profile that primarily results from the country’s most popular processing method, giling basah. Or, wet hulled in the Bahasa language.
